September 2009: Gorkana forms alliance with Women In Journalism

We are pleased to announce that we have recently joined forces with Women In Journalism, a networking, campaigning, training and social organisation for women journalists who work across all the written media.  WIJ grew out of a demand for women to be more effectively represented at senior level in newspapers and magazines, and has since evolved into a forum for women in journalism at all levels.

September 2009: Gorkana supports the Hacks Vs Flaks cricket match

We were thrilled to support the annual Hacks Vs Flacks cricket match which took place earlier this month. The match, an annual fixture in the media calendar is held in order to raise money for a number of charities.  This year’s beneficiaries were The Pace Centre, a school for children with physical disabilities, and the Paul D’Auria Cancer Centre, a charity which supports people and their families who are affected by cancer.  The match was organised by FD’s James Melville-Ross and featured players from the Yorkshire Post, M Communications, and The Independent (just to mention a few). Our Gorkana representative Stephen Marshall had to fill in for an injured Hack at the last minute, and he must have done something right as they won the cup for the first time in four years! A great afternoon was had by all and we are delighted to say that an incredible £20,000 was raised for the two charities.

September 2009: Gorkana sponsors Radio Academy debate

We were delighted to be the sole sponsor of a recent Radio Academy debate that discussed spin and the political process, and tried to decipher exactly who is setting the agenda. A packed room full of network editors, presenters and researchers, PRs, and the heads of several consultancies and journalism courses heard from Mark Borkowski, founder of Borkowski PR, former apprentice contestant Katie Hopkins, and political blogger Guido Fawkes (aka Paul Staines), under the guidance of Chair and BBC Radio 2 Presenter Jeremy Vine.
