Gorkana has analysed circa 273,770 social media posts and 63,425 pieces of mainstream UK coverage covering the banking, asset management and professional services sectors.
So what does our analysis reveal about the banking and social media (and traditional media) trends so far this year?
Here are some key highlights from January’s Barometer Reports….
- Banking saw coverage across all media channels, with bonuses and the political storm surrounding this being the most prolific topic. Whilst not unexpected it is interesting that the impact was significant across social media channels given the emotive subject matter. In addition the Eurozone impacted volumes as the volatile market continued.
- Banking share of voice was dominated by RBS and mentions of Stephen Hester in both mainstream and social channels. A clear link being made to Hester’s bonus stimulated much conversation across social forums and instigated some direct tweets.
- Asset management saw less coverage volume than banking, yet their key topic ‘’assets and equities’, featured fairly evenly across mainstream and social, 18% and 16% respectively. General coverage was led by specific industry stories, which contrasts the results seen across the other financial services areas; banking showed high levels of discussion surrounding remuneration.
- Accountancy and legal professions’ key differentiator during January was one of volume. Both key media channels coverage made reference to accountants which ran at an average ten times the number than that of name-checked lawyers. Spikes in coverage across the month were as the result of deal news, particularly administration appointments of accountancy firms.
- The Big Four accountants dominated share of voice with 90% in both mainstream and social media, whereas only two legal firms had a share greater than 10% in both categories with none greater than a 16% share of voice.
