The PR and Social Media Cheat Sheet #042

If you work in PR and are interested in the latest thinking on media monitoring, PR planning, media analysis and social media measurement, these are the must read stories from the last week.

This week’s top PR and social media picks:

  • Gorkana debate: Is the press losing its influence?
  • Facebook launched ‘Explore London 2012′, a dedicated athlete portal without advertising.
  • BBC Worldwide announced that it is to launch a mentoring scheme for digital startups called BBC Labs. The scheme will launch on June 22 at Google Campus.
  • A Wired blogger called the new MacBook Pro “the least repairable laptop” he’d ever taken apart. And as for Apple’s ‘green’ claims that the computer is comprised of “highly recyclable aluminum and glass”? Well, it’s true, these elements are highly recyclable. BUT NOT IF THEY’RE GLUED TOGETHER. #FAIL
  • MINI collaborated with the London 2012 Olympics to create ‘The Britalian Job’.

  • Nike became the first UK company to have a Twitter campaign banned.
  • What advertisers find out about you when you click ‘Like’ on Facebook. What does the social network ‘really know’?
  • Walmart found itself at the centre of a massive PR fail after it was discovered that a member of the press office posed as a reporter at a press conference.
  • The Boston Celtics may not have found themselves in the NBA Finals this year, but hopefully they can take consolation in the fact that they’re very good at social media.
  • Going viral: the Drive-Thru floating cup.

  • Microsoft unveiled Surface, the company’s Windows 8 tablet computer.
  • To respond, or not respond to blog comments?
  • eBook sales surpassed hardcover in the US.
  • Nine essential Facebook marketing resources.
  • Right this is the grossest/most mental thing I’ve ever read: A South Korean woman. Got pregnant. In the mouth. With baby squid.
