Retail Freelance Journalist Opportunity
A freelancer is required to write a 1,500 word feature on the "Future of the High Street" for a supplement in New Statesman magazine. It should include projections from planners and architects on how the high street can be made to work better and whether the homogenisation of shopping precincts is a good or bad thing. They should also try to get comment from Stephen Timms at the DTI about how the department sees the retail environment changing over the decade or beyond. The development of out-of-town shopping centres could be discussed as well as the rise of the supermarkets (Andrew Sims of the New Economics Foundation would be a good contact for the antis) and, of course, a suitable response from the chains themselves. The Competition Commission's investigation should certainly play a significant role in the discussion.

The deadline is Monday 10 September. For more information please contact Paul Rodgers on +44 (0)7803 167 943 and p.rodgers@independent.co.uk.
